This list of air-raid shelter in Augsburg includes shelters in the city of Augsburg , which were open to the public in the past for the public or have been provided by authorities and companies for their employees available or served as a warehouse or manufacturing facility. Due to the inadequate as-built documentation, it is not always possible to specify the capacity or the construction time exactly. It must also be assumed that the following list is incomplete. However, private bunkers or those that are still in operation are not listed in order to protect the respective owners.

background

Shortly after the seizure of power by the Nazis in 1933, the city government began planning of public bomb shelters. These should mainly be set up in existing basement rooms. The construction of air raid shelters, on the other hand, was not seriously advanced in the following years. This did not change even after the war began. Furthermore, the city set up neither an office nor a unit for air protection matters. The local air raid protection officer severely criticized the city administration's negligent approach.

The inadequate preparation can be traced back to two causes. On the one hand, there were simply not enough building materials and workers available to erect protective structures. Even the immediate Führer program , which was ordered in October 1940, did not bring about any improvement in this regard, despite the classification of Augsburg as a “first-order air raid shelter”. On the other hand, because of the great distance to the war in Augsburg, people felt relatively safe for a long time. For this reason, mostly fragmentation trenches were dug or private cellars were converted into air raid shelters with modest means. A rethink did not occur until 1943, when more and more bombs fell on Augsburg and the number of victims increased.
