Location of the UN sector in the Bolama administrative region

UN is a sector of the Bolama region in the far west of Guinea-Bissau . It belongs to the Bissagos Archipelago and consists of the eponymous island of Uno and other islands and islets . The entire Bissagos area was declared a Biosphere Reserve by UNESCO in 1996 .
History and structure
The UN sector was created in 2004 by spinning off the Caravela and Bubaque sectors . Caravela mainly gave up the islands of Uno and Uracane, Bubaque mainly ceded Canogo and Orango.
The UN sector consists of the following islands:
- Eguba (158 inhabitants)
- Orango (1250 inhabitants)
- Uno (3324 inhabitants)
- Unhocomo (678 inhabitants)
- Unhocomozinho (160 inhabitants)
- Uracane (1181 inhabitants)
There are also uninhabited small islands and islets.

The UN sector has 6,751 inhabitants (as of 2009).
Most of the Bijagos live here with only a few to a few Pepel , Biafada , Manjago , Mandinka and Fulbe from the mainland , plus Nhominca from Senegal , who are fishermen temporarily on some, mostly uninhabited islands.
