Trinidad and Tobago has been independent since 1962, but has only been a republic since 1976, which is why the first president was not elected until 1976. From 1962 to 1976 the British Queen Elizabeth II was the head of state. Michael Williams automatically succeeded Ellis Clarke as Senate President until five days later, Noor Hassanali was elected to succeed him.
