Anthony Thomas Aquinas Carmona (born March 7, 1953 in Fyzabad ) is a Trinidadian lawyer and politician . From 2013 he was the fifth president and thus head of state of his home country. He previously served as a judge at the Supreme Court of Trinidad and Tobago and at the International Criminal Court in The Hague .

Life

Anthony Carmona was born in Fyzabad in southwest Trinidad as the eldest of six children to Dennis Stephen and Barbara Carmona. After attending Presentation College in San Fernando , he studied between 1973 and 1983 at the University of the West Indies , first English and political science on the UWI campus in Mona, Jamaica, and then, after a one-year break, law on the UWI campus in Cave Hill ( Barbados ). From 1981 he graduated from Hugh Wooding Law School in St. Augustine . He holds a Bachelor of Arts in English and Political Science and a Bachelor of Laws .

Carmona initially worked as a public prosecutor in Trinidad and Tobago, and from 2001 to 2004 also at the International Criminal Court for Rwanda and the International Criminal Court for the former Yugoslavia . He was then appointed to the Supreme Court Justice of Trinidad and Tobago. In December 2011 he was elected judge at the International Criminal Court with 72 votes out of 104. He took office in February 2012.

Anthony Carmona succeeded George Maxwell Richards as President of Trinidad and Tobago in February 2013 . Previously, the non-party Carmona was proposed by the ruling United National Congress as the successor to the outgoing president. After the opposition People’s National Movement had spoken out in favor of him, he was appointed president of the Electoral College of the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago . He took office on March 18 of the same year. As the first president of Trinidad, he was not nominated for a second term; The lawyer Paula Mae Weekes , who took office on March 19, 2018, was appointed as his successor.
