Sir Ellis Emmanuel Innocent Clarke GCMG TC (born December 28, 1917 in Port of Spain , † December 30, 2010 in Port of Spain) was a politician and President of Trinidad and Tobago .

Studies and professional activities

After a scholarship in mathematics in 1938, he began to study law at the University of London , which he completed in 1941 with a Bachelor of Laws (LL.B.) . From 1941 to 1954 he practiced as a lawyer in Gray's Inn and Port of Spain .

From 1954 to 1956, Clarke was Solicitor-General (Chief Prosecutor) and then Deputy Colonial Secretary. From 1957 to 1962 he was Attorney-General in the time of the Federation of West Indies .

After Trinidad and Tobago gained independence on August 31, 1962, Prime Minister Eric Eustace Williams appointed him Permanent Representative to the United Nations (UN) and Ambassador to the United States . He was also accredited as ambassador to Canada and Mexico . He held these offices until 1968. He was then until 1973 Chairman (Chairman) of BWIA West Indies Airways .

On February 5, 1963 he was raised as a Knight Bachelor ("Sir") to the nobility .

Last Governor General and First President

On September 15, 1972, he was appointed Governor General of Trinidad and Tobago by Queen Elizabeth II to succeed Sir Solomon Hochoy . In addition, he was accepted into the Order of St. Michael and St. George on July 27, 1972 as Knight Grand Cross .

After the island state was converted into a presidential republic on August 1, 1976, Clarke was elected the first President of Trinidad and Tobago by the electoral assembly of the House of Representatives and the Senate and during his tenure did not use the suffix "Sir" associated with his British knighthood . . He was later re-elected and ended his second term on March 13, 1987. Due to political differences with the ruling National Alliance for Reconstruction (NAR), he waived a third term. He was succeeded, after a six-day transitional presidency of Michael Williams , Noor Hassanali .
