The function of the state president as chairman of the state government was replaced in May 1933 by an office now officially designated as the prime minister , which, however, was restricted in its powers. According to the second law for the alignment of the states with the Reich of April 7, 1933, Wilhelm Murr was transferred to the newly created office of Reich Governor for Württemberg on May 6, 1933 . Murr exercised state authority in Württemberg and, in particular, was able to appoint and dismiss the chairman of the state government, but was not allowed to be a member of the state government at the same time. Therefore, on May 6, 1933, Christian Mergenthaler was appointed chairman of the state government and prime minister with limited power.
