Documented in 882 was an "ecclesia S. Martini in villa rautena" as the royal court's own church. In 885 the church was owned by the St. Gallen monastery . The parish was probably independent from the 9th century. In 1476 a new building was built, which was consecrated in 1477. The church was enlarged in 1657 and renovated in 1740. From 1951 to 1968 the interior was expanded and redesigned. Archaeological investigations were carried out from 1968 to 1982.
