History of the KvG schools

The history of the Cardinal von Galen Schools began as early as 1862. A private school for boys was set up, which mainly served the training of traders. Today around 1300 pupils are trained and guided to the possible general school qualifications.

Overview:

  • March 11, 1862 - The government in Münster grants permission to set up a private school for boys. 18 students are taught by 2 teachers, also in Dutch. Already at the beginning of the 19th century future merchants were trained in the “Haugen Schoule” of the ten Brink family.
  • November 14, 1866 - Formation of a “board of trustees”, conversion of the school into a rectorate school (Latin school) with a spiritual director. Sexta and Quinta.
  • 1871 - Expansion of the rectorate school to 5 years: Sexta to Obertertia.
  • July 27, 1908 - Statute of the school association for entry in the register of associations: "Private Catholic Rectorate School".

  • Apr. 29, 1966 - Commencement of classes at the grammar school, 1 teacher, 30 pupils.
  • March 23, 1972 - § 1 of the new statutes: The purpose of the association is the sponsorship and promotion of the cath. Realschule and the cath. High school. "The entire educational work of the school should be based on an understanding of people and the world that is shaped by the revelation and the truths of faith of the Catholic Church."
  • August 1, 1972 - The students from St. Agatha School are taken over to the Cardinal von Galen School.

The parents' initiative that has arisen and the KvG-Gymnasium's school caretakers are demanding the resignation of the board, more transparency and a democratic opening of the association.
  • 2001 - The financial future of the KvG schools is uncertain. The main sponsor, the Brenninkmeyer family, would like to withdraw from the ongoing funding of the KvG schools and is demanding that the Mettingen community participate.
  • November 2001 - Negotiations at the "round table" between the community of Mettingen, the association of school friends and its two main sponsors - the Brenninkmeyer family and the Bishop of Münster - to finance a Catholic school in ecumenical openness under the umbrella of a church foundation.

  • August 2002 - Negotiations between the municipalities of Mettingen, Lotte and Westerkappeln for the preservation of the KvG schools begin. • The incumbent board resigns - as a result of the dispute over the dismissal of the head of the grammar school. The general assembly of the VdSF elects Marianne Ellermann, Heiner Windheuser, Jürgen Lammers and Hartwig Koch-Schweitzer as the new board.
  • With 753 pupils in a consistent four-pass class, the Realschule has a new student record. For reasons of space, the secondary school is to be brought back into the Dreizügigkeit year after year.
  • 2004 - The expansion and internal redevelopment of the school center is being prepared in working groups of association members, parents and teachers: On the west side, a two-storey class wing is created in which the secondary school can be housed closed. When working on the construction of the connecting tract to the new building, it is found that the prefabricated elements of the old building facade are hazardous to safety and require renovation. New construction and renovation of old buildings are generously supported by the Brenninkmeyer family.
  • 2005 - Realschule moves into the new wing, including the extended outdoor facilities; Then the interior and exterior renovation of the old building, which will be completed in 2006 with the demolition of the makeshift classes, the so-called "dwarf bunker".

These are connected by a glass bridge.

The high school

The grammar school consists of 800 students. The majority of the classes are four-class, and the students come mainly from the surrounding communities Lotte , Westerkappeln and Mettingen . The KvG music project is a network of:

  • the music ensembles of the KvG schools (big bands, big band classes, orchestras etc.) sponsored by the KvG schools
  • the support association KvG-Musikprojekt Mettingen e. V. for music at the Cardinal von Galen Schools and the region
  • a jazz, rock, pop-oriented music school sponsored by the KvG-Musikprojekt Mettingen e. V. He cooperates with the community of Mettingen and the school authority. 350 students are trained in the music school by 30 professional teachers.

The following music groups sponsored by the KvG schools are currently active:

  • KvG Junior Bigband
  • KvG big band classes JS 6 and JS 7
  • KvG Alumni Big Band
  • KvG Jazz-Funk-Soul Combo
  • KvG Junior Orchestra
  • KvG Wind Orchestra

The network consisting of the friends' association of the KvG music project, the association of school friends and the community of Mettingen represents a very successful cooperation model between a music school, general school and a municipality. In addition to the extensive educational and musical work, under the leadership of the association and with the help of additional Sponsors a music tract for music lessons and the ensembles at the KvG schools are financed.

The KvG Big Band is an ambitious youth big band that has won many prizes in national and international competitions (e.g. Skoda Jazz Prize, Dutch Big Band Contest, national jazz orchestra competition). She makes numerous appearances throughout the year and has already recorded various albums (e.g. 2011 Swing meets Pop ). The KVG big band class, which was founded in 2012, was awarded a first prize in the state youth jazz competition in 2014. The band carried out many successful international exchange projects (Berlin, Paris, Cornwall, Lucerne, Copenhagen, the Netherlands). There is also an intensive partnership with the KGS Big Band Norderney, which also includes the KVG Junior Big Band and the big band classes. Workshops and courses with well-known musicians ( Tom Gaebel , Peter Herbolzheimer , Benny Brown, Kurt Klose, Denis Gäbel ) are held regularly .

Likewise, the junior orchestra (Elisabeth Schulte), the wind orchestra and the combo (Florian Seidenstücker) have already made a few appearances in school and regional settings.

Extra-curricular activities and miscellaneous

As a “European school”, the KvG feels committed to the European idea. Accordingly, there is an annual Europe Day, together with fellows from the Comenius College , on which foreign languages, countries and cultures are presented. There is also an exchange program with partner schools in grade 9. 2012/13 students can choose between Lithuania , the Czech Republic , Denmark , Poland and France . You can also acquire various language certificates (DELF, Cambridge).

School without racism

The KvG is also a “ school without racism - school with courage ”. Prominent sponsors are assigned to each project school. In this case it concerns the basketball Bundesliga team Artland Dragons and the guitarist of the alternative band Donots . Within the scope of this project, campaigns with the topic of "tolerance and (civil) courage" are integrated or organized for this purpose. A working group is currently being formed by students for students, which is pushing the work forward.

The former project 13+, funded by the state of North Rhine-Westphalia, will be continued at the KvG. During the lunch breaks, schoolchildren offer working groups, workshops and activities for other pupils: from dancing to knitting to homework help. In addition, there is an offer of other working groups, such as the nature working group, the Amnesty International working group, the school newspaper working group or the orchestras / bands as part of the music project.

The KvG has its own method concept. Depending on the grade, the students in the lower and middle grades receive different method training and corresponding repetition cycles in the following years. In this way, they learn important work and learning techniques actively and not just on the side.

Schoolchildren regularly take part in competitions, including SAMMS, discover chemistry, ESRI competition, BigBand competitions, German Chemistry Olympiad , sports competitions such as youth training for the Olympics (especially in gymnastics).

kiosk

The kiosk is located in the old auditorium and is very popular with the students. It is run by members of the Ledder workshops . There you can buy various baked goods and drinks. The distribution of lunch on days with afternoon classes is also organized by the employees of the Ledder workshops.
