The Little Buffalo River ( English for "small buffalo river") is a tributary of the Great Slave Lake in the north of the Canadian province of Alberta and in the south of the Northwest Territories .

The Little Buffalo River rises 15 km west of Thultue Lake in Wood Buffalo National Park in northern Alberta. It flows south past Thultue Lake, then turns northeast and later north. The river reaches the border with the Northwest Territories. It now forms the eastern border of the national park. The Little Buffalo River flows a piece to the east and is crossed by the Fort Smith Highway (Highway 5). It now turns north-northwest and flows west of the Slave River to the Great Slave Lake. The border of the national park ends about 40 km before the mouth. The Fort Resolution Highway (Highway 6) crosses the Little Buffalo River just before its mouth. Here is the place of the same name and the Little Buffalo River Crossing Territorial Park . The mouth of the Little Buffalo River is 110 km east of Hay River . The Buffalo River flows into the Great Slave Lake 70 km west of the mouth of the Little Buffalo River. The Little Buffalo River has a length of about 300 km.
