Little Pal

Little Pal is a pop song written by Ray Henderson (music), Lew Brown and Buddy DeSylva (lyrics) and released in 1929.

The songwriting team Henderson, DeSylva and Brown wrote the song Little Pal for the film musical Say It with Songs (1929). With the sentimental ballad Little Pal , the three songwriters and Al Jolson hoped to build on the success of Sonny Boy , but Little Pal's record had a similar sales success (# 1), but not nearly the same appeal. Nevertheless, Gene Austin / Nat Shilkret Orchestra (Victor 21952, # 7) and Paul Whiteman / Bing Crosby (# 9) managed to get into the US charts with the song.

First recordings and later cover versions

Other musicians who covered the song from 1929 included Joe Venuti and His New Yorkers (OKeh, with Jimmy and Tommy Dorsey , Arthur Schutt , Eddie Lang and singer Smith Ballew ), and Béla Dajos (Odeon) in Berlin the tenor John McCormack (HMV). Paul O'Montis recorded a German version of Little Pal . In 1936, Willy Jensen recorded a Swedish version ( Lille Kammerat , Columbia GD-93) with Kai Julian's Strygeensemble . The song was used u. a. in one of the Fleischer Studios talk cartoons , in Betty Boop's Little Pal (1934).
