Ri Yong-gil (* around 1952 ) is a North Korean politician of the Labor Party of Korea (PdAK) and general of the Korean People's Army (KVA), who was Chief of the General Staff of the KVA between 2013 and 2016. According to South Korean press reports, he is said to have been executed in early February 2016.

In May 2016, however, his name reappeared on a list of newly elected leaders of the Labor Party. Accordingly, Ri Yong-gil was elected a member of the Central Committee, a candidate for the Politburo and a member of the party's Central Military Commission.

Life

Ri completed officer training in the Korean People's Army and subsequently found numerous uses. In April 2002 he was promoted to lieutenant general and commanding general of the 3rd Army Corps. He then acted from 2007 to 2012 as the commanding general of the 5th Army Corps stationed in Kangwŏn-do Province . During this time he was promoted to Colonel General in 2010 and was a candidate for the Central Committee (ZK) of the Labor Party of Korea (PdAK).

Thereafter, at the end of 2012, Ri took over from General Kim Myong-guk as the head of the operations department of the General Staff. In this function he was responsible for the operational coordination of the corps commands as well as reporting to the chief of the general staff and the high command. His successor as head of the operations department was Pyon In-son in August 2013 .

In August 2013, Ri was himself the successor to General Kim Kyok-sik as Chief of the General Staff of the KPA and at the same time promoted to General . In 2014 he was one of the companions of Vice-Marshal Choe Ryong-hae on a visit to the People's Republic of China . On February 10, 2016, the South Korean news and press agency Yonhap News Agency reported that Ri had been executed. He had been charged with corruption and the "formation of conspiratorial groups". The new chief of staff was General Ri Myong-su , who was Minister for People's Security between 2011 and 2013. Since Ri was spotted again in May 2016, the message from South Korea turned out to be untrue.
