background

The same year that Thelonious Monk appeared on the cover of Time magazine , he recorded several live sessions for Columbia, appearing on albums such as Misterioso (Recorded on Tour) (1965) and Live at the It Club (1982), the was recorded on the days leading up to the San Francisco concert.

This 2-CD set contains two and a half hours of San Francisco's Jazz Workshop, recorded on November 3rd and 4th, 1964 with his working quartet. Almost half of the 2001 new edition consists of previously unpublished material. This re-edition documents how the Monk Quartet played in a live setting on two consecutive evenings.

reception

Jim Santilla reviewed the expanded new edition in All About Jazz in 2001 : “Usually Monk plays the introduction himself. He creates a gentle mood and expresses slight movement. In these quieter moments, the coughing and lively conversation in the room shows up. As soon as the Trio Monk joins, there is no more room for other sounds. Charlie Rouse, Larry Gales and Ben Riley make a fire that never goes out. Each of the artists has solos on occasion; however, both Monk and Rouse are at the forefront. The repetition that exists under the song titles is simply due to the fact that Monk made some of the same choices on the second night. The versions are equivalent, but changes make them of value to the listener. The previously unpublished version of 'Bright Mississippi', for example, is almost three times as long as the published one and offers the listener a lot more. "
