reception

Ken Dryden gave the album 4½ (out of five) stars in Allmusic and wrote: “Three gripping extended trio improvisations by known standards are the highlight of this collection, although the delicious jazz waltz 'How Can You Not?' the pianist and the moody ballad 'If Only for a Time' leave lasting impressions. The trio also interprets four originals by the well-known Italian film composer Ennio Morricone, highlighted by the dramatic rendition of 'Musashi', in which the pianist's lyrics are complemented by the sensitive accompaniment of Johnson and Baron. The spirit of Bill Evans is often present in Enrico Pieranunzi's play in this collection, although it never inherits his musical personality. We recommend."

John Kelman gave the album in All About Jazz the highest rating of five stars and wrote that Pieranunzi's Impressionist romanticism, which has often been compared to the legendary Bill Evans, had his preference for focusing on material from Italian composers alongside his own writing Work often lends an unmistakable Mediterranean atmosphere. But his collaboration with drummer Paul Motian on the freer, but no less beautiful Doorways (Cam Jazz, 2005) showed a more angular playing stance, which is just as part of his overall approach and is just as much a part of Live in Japan as gentle ballads. straight swing and unmistakable lyrics. Almost half of this 100-minute performance is dedicated to free improvisation, but never without focus or collective intention.

Kelman highlights the importance of the collaboration between Marc Johnson and Joey Baron, who in the years prior to this recording had worked with artists such as guitarist John Abercrombie and pianist John Taylor , as well as on the bassist's album Shades of Jade (ECM, 2005) had. This rhythm section should be viewed "with the same awe" as that of Scott LaFaro / Paul Motian around 1960 and Ron Carter / Tony Williams with Miles Davis . “Infinitely flexible and always intuitive, their musical range seems to have no limits.” Live in Japan is an energetic, elegant and elusive release, the author sums up, “which Pieranunzi, Johnson and Baron positioned and supported in the upper level of the piano trios Sicherheit will be considered one of the best trio records of 2007.
