Llanystumdwy ( Welsh pronunciation [ ɬanəsˈtɨmdʊɨ ]) is a town and municipality on the Lleyn Peninsula ( Pen Llŷn ) in County Gwynedd , Wales , in the former Cantref Eifionydd . Since 1934 part of the parish of Llangybi has also belonged to Llanystumdwy.
General
Llanystumdwy is on the bridge that connects Criccieth in the east and Pwllheli in the west over the Afon Dwyfor River . The old stone houses of the place are listed, including the local pub Tafarn y Plu ( English "The Feathers"), as well as the two houses ( Tŷ Newydd and Highgate ) of David Lloyd George , the future British Prime Minister .
This best-known resident of Llanystumdwy lived here until he was 16 years old and got his political instinct and dislike of the landed gentry from his uncle, a lay preacher. He was buried here, the stone of the tomb as well as the local chapel Capel Moreia was created by Sir Bertram Clough Williams-Ellis . Jonah Jones, Lloyd George's nephew and former Arch Druid of Wales , wrote the poem that adorns the stone. There is also a Lloyd George Memorial Museum in the village .
The well-known company Cadwalader's Ice Cream has its headquarters here. The local football club CPD Llanystumdwy FC plays in the Gwynedd League .
