The Lobé Waterfalls are waterfalls of the Lobé in the southern province of Cameroon . They are among the few waterfalls on earth that find their way directly into the sea.

Since April 18, 2006 the Lobé waterfalls have been on the list of proposals for UNESCO World Heritage .

geography

The Lobé waterfalls are seven kilometers south of Kribi . The falls are part of the white palm beaches of Bwambe Beach . The waters of the Lobé River pour directly into the Gulf of Guinea . With a height of a little more than 20 meters and a width of approx. 100 meters, the river cascades into the Atlantic Ocean.

The source of the Lobé is located in the Ntem mountain range in the middle of the Campo Ma'an National Park .

From Kribi a road leads towards Campo. Just before the village of Grand Batanga is a junction towards the Lobé Falls.

It is often wrongly claimed that the Lobé waterfall is the only waterfall that pours its water directly into the sea. This claim cannot stand up to closer examination. Other waterfalls that flow into the sea are z. For example the Karpuzkaldrian waterfalls near Antalya , the McWay Creek waterfall in Julia Pfeiffer Burns State Park in the USA or the Glint Coast in Estonia .

spirituality

For the residents of the area, the Batanga , the Maabi and Pygmies , the falls are a place of spirituality and belief. The indigenous people celebrate various cultural rites with the help of the water of the river and sea . For example, the pygmy miracle healers submerge their sick under the falling water. This type of ceremony is understood as an act of purification. In addition, the waterfalls of the Lobé are an important part of the enthronement of a new Batanga king. He stays with the cases for a certain time. Through this he acquires the blessing of the spirits and the ancestors. For the indigenous peoples, the Lobé also stands for Jingou , mother water or man / woman - the spirit of water . For the inhabitants of the entire coastal area, the omnipotence of the water spirits is a myth that has shaped their entire culture for many centuries.

environment

The apparently ideal world with the paradisiacal panorama is deceptive. First of all, as in almost all of West Africa and Africa, there is the problem of deforestation . The uncontrolled cutting down of large trees such as legumes and mangrove trees threatens the habitat of rare birds. An action plan by the government of Cameroon provides for the reforestation of the mangrove forests while limiting the existing overexploitation .

The Chad-Cameroon pipeline with its oil terminals poses a further problem. There is a latent risk of an explosion or contamination of the environment through leaks or material wear. The Cameroonian government is trying to ensure the safety and protection of the pipeline through agreements with the operator ExxonMobil .

In addition, the urbanization of the area puts permanent pressure on the ecosystem . Here the government tries to maintain the balance between ecological sustainability on the one hand and traditional integrity on the other.
