The Julia Pfeiffer Burns State Park is a State Park in Monterey County in the US state of California . It is located 37 km south of Carmel on the coastline known as Big Sur and should not be confused with Pfeiffer Big Sur State Park, 16 km north .

geography

The 1,522 hectare park stretches from the rocky Pacific coast to the 900 m high mountains of the Santa Lucia Mountains . The McWay Creek flows through the park, flowing over a granite cliff in a 24 m high waterfall into McWay Cove and thus directly into the Pacific.

Flora and fauna

The vegetation of the mountainous terrain consists of coastal redwoods , Lithocarpus densiflorus , American strawberry trees , cypresses and chaparral .

In December and January gray whales can be observed from observation points on their migration south to Baja California and in March and April on their migration north. In addition, seals and California sea lions and occasionally sea otters to see, as well as numerous marine and coastal birds such as cormorants , gulls , brown pelicans and oystercatchers .

history

In the late 1870s, Christopher McWay settled in the area and built a farm called Saddle Rock Ranch. The ranch was bought in the 1930s by former New York Congressman Lathrop Brown, who had a spacious property built for himself and his wife above the falls. His wife, Helen Hooper Brown, was friends with Julia Pfeiffer Burns (1868-1928), who came from a pioneer family that had lived in Big Sur since 1869. In 1962, Helen Hooper Brown bequeathed all of her land to the state on condition that a state park be established in the area and named after Julia Pfeiffer Burns. After the state park was established, the Browns' estate was almost completely demolished in 1965 to restore the property to its natural state .

Tourist facilities

There is a fee to visit the park. Several hiking trails lead through the park. The terrace of the Browns' former estate serves as a lookout point. In the park there are two small rustic tent sites for hikers, which also have picnic areas and offer spectacular views over the coast.

Off the coast is the 680 hectare Julia Pfeiffer Burns Underwater Area , a diving area established in 1970 .

Trivia

The McWay waterfall served as the background for an SKL commercial with Günther Jauch .
