Fort Tejon is a former US Army military base in California . It was founded in 1854 and was only used for 10 years. The fort is located on the Tejon Pass , the connection through the mountains that connects the California Long Valley with the coastal plain around Los Angeles .

The task of the base was to protect white settlers from attacks by Indian tribes such as the Paiute and Mohave . You should also watch over the peaceful Emigdiano tribe . This tribe, closely related to the Chumash of Santa Barbara , had several villages near Fort Tejon and was generally considered to be cooperative with the European settlers and the army. One of the curiosities of this army base is that camels were available as mounts for the soldiers for a short time . However, they turned out to be of no use.

In 1940 the landowner donated around 2 hectares at the former site of the fort to the state of California, which designated Fort Tejon as a State Historic Park . Several adobe buildings and huts have been reconstructed since 1947, the museum now shows reconstructed rooms and workshops of the fort, as well as documents and other information about the operation of the fort and its time. The park also has an outdoor area. On May 6, 1971, Fort Tejon was added to the National Register of Historic Places as a Historic District .

The Fort Tejon earthquake in 1857 is named after this camp. The epicenter was not at Tejon Pass, but near Parkfield . The fort took its name from the fact that the camp's residents were among the few who reliably reported on this quake in California, which was then still sparsely populated.

The plaque commemorates the only camel brigade in the US Army
