The Corona del Mar State Beach ( Corona del Mar Spanish for "crown of the sea") is a state beach in Corona del Mar , a district of Newport Beach in the US state of California . The sheltered stretch of beach stretches along the coastline of the Pacific Ocean .

geography

The sandy beach is framed by high cliffs on the land side. A small pier forms the east entrance to Newport Bay and Newport Harbor, the port of Newport Beach. The coastline has a length of about 800 meters. Corona del Mar State Beach can be reached via Oceanfront Boulevard. Several residential buildings are enthroned above the coastline.

The grounds are popular for sunbathing and swimming. At low tide you can walk in the rocks by the sea and a small sea creatures in the tidal pools ( tidepools watch). There are several nets that invite you to play beach volleyball . The beach is a popular destination for surfers . There are some excellent surf spots just offshore , including the famous The Wedge .

history

Corona del Mar State Beach was a popular spot among surfers until the 1930s . However, the creation of a pier at Newport Beach Harbor largely deflected the surf and now focused on The Wedge . The wave can reach great heights in optimal sea conditions. Since the conditions are usually good all year round, this stretch of beach is always populated by numerous surfers.

Surfer legend Duke Kahanamoku was the first person to use a surfboard for rescue purposes on Corona del Mar State Beach in 1925. Kahanamoku came to the aid of a fishing boat that had capsized in the strong surf.
