The Pfeiffer Big Sur State Park is a State Park in Monterey County in the US state of California . The park is considered one of the main attractions of the Big Sur .
geography
Located 25 miles south of Carmel on California State Route 1 and two miles south of Big Sur, the 391-acre park should not be confused with Julia Pfeiffer Burns State Park, 12 miles south . The park extends on the western slopes of the Santa Lucia Mountains and is shaped by the river valley of the Big Sur River, which meanders in the park through sequoia forests to the Pacific Ocean, eight kilometers away. The 18 m high Pfeiffer Falls are hidden in the forest .
fauna and Flora
The river valley of the Big Sur River is forested with sequoia trees , Lithocarpus densiflorus and strawberry trees , the mountain slopes are overgrown with chaparral or consist of open mountain meadows. Mule deer , western gray squirrels , raccoons , skunks and birds such as dippers and belt fishermen live in the park .
history
As a pioneer farmer, John Pfeiffer, after whom the park was named, worked 64 hectares of mountainous terrain between Sycamore Canyon and the Big Sur River. In 1884 he moved into a cabin above the Big Sur River Gorge, which is now reconstructed as the "Homestead Cabin" on the Gorge Trail. As early as 1908, the family opened an inn called the Pfeiffer Ranch Resort. John Pfeiffer sold or gave away his farmland to the state in 1933, which thus forms the core of the state park. The Civilian Conservation Corps built the rustic lodge and other park facilities in the 1930s.
In 2008 parts of the park were destroyed by the Basin Complex Fire .
Tourist facilities
The park has a campsite with 218 spaces, some of which are along the Big Sur River, and the Big Sur Lodge with 61 rooms. Numerous hiking trails lead through the park, some of which are currently (2011) not usable again due to the destruction caused by the forest fire.
