This is the list of State Parks in the State of California . As of June 2009, California had 279 state parks with a maintenance cost of $ 143 million. In 2008, 80 million State Park visitors were counted, who were able to discover a wide range of topics from ecology, archeology or ethnoculture in redwood forests, ghost towns or museums. Around 2,000 paid workers take care of the conservation and protection of nature, landscape, buildings and infrastructure in California's state parks . The California Department of Parks and Recreation is responsible for maintaining the state parks .

Closure plans

In June 2009, plans by the California government were announced that up to 220 of the 279 state parks are threatened with closure in order to reduce the budget deficit. The savings would be in the order of magnitude of 0.6% of the total deficit, although the concrete implementation had not yet been formulated. The 59 state parks that are to be preserved are generating measurable profits. Opponents of the closure, on the other hand, calculate that every dollar invested would bring an average of 2.35 times the income in the vicinity of the state parks.

The closure plans were further specified and in May 2011, Governor Jerry Brown presented a concept according to which 70 parks will be closed in the summer of 2012, which have been selected so that 92% of the visitors will find open parks and 94% of the income will be retained through entrance fees. The administration is looking for non-profit organizations that could take over individual parks on the closure list as sponsors.
