Wolfgang Thüne (born October 8, 1949 in Heiligenstadt ) is a former German gymnast . His home club was the ASK Vorwärts Potsdam and later Bayer 04 Leverkusen .

He won a bronze medal in the team all-round match with the GDR team at the 1972 Summer Olympics in Munich . In the individual all-around he reached ninth place in these games. Also at the World Championships in 1970 in Ljubljana and 1974 in Varna , he was third in the all- around with the GDR team. His greatest individual success was winning the silver medal on the horizontal bar at the 1974 World Championships. A year earlier, he had taken third place at the 1973 European Championships on the same device.

At GDR championships in 1973 and 1974 he won all around, 1969, 1973 and 1974 on pommel horse , 1973 and 1974 in ring gymnastics and 1974 on horizontal bar a total of eight individual titles. Wolfgang Thüne, who was professionally active as an officer in the National People's Army in the GDR , fled to the Federal Republic of Germany on June 2, 1975 during the European Championships in Bern with the support of the 1974 bar world champion Eberhard Gienger . He joined the Bayer 04 Leverkusen club there and was German champion in all-around, pommel horse and horse jumping in 1977 .

After the end of his active career, Wolfgang Thüne worked in Leverkusen as a trainer.
