The Loch Ewe Distillery is a Scotch distillery , which supposedly is the smallest legally operated distillery in Scotland. It is located in Drumchork near Aultbea on Loch Ewe in the Highlands .

history

In 1997, Frances Clotworthy, b. Oates, together with her husband John Clotworthy, owner of the renovated 16th century Drumchork Lodge Hotel in Aultbea. Later they tried to get a license for a distillery as a supplement to the hotel, which they were initially refused due to the required minimum brewing volume of 1,800 liters. Due to a loophole in the law, the distillery got a license in 2003 after a three-year application process, despite a maximum brewing volume of 240 liters. The loophole in the law was closed 10 minutes after the license was granted. The license is the first private license of its kind granted in Scotland for 190 years. According to his own statements, the founder John Clotworthy was previously a whiskey ambassador of the Scottish Licensed Trade Association , the innkeepers, innkeepers, hoteliers, nightspots, clubs and represents licensed distributors and manufacturers of alcoholic beverages. The project started with a start-up capital limited to £ 50,000 . A garage behind the Drumchork Lodge Hotel was converted into a distillery under the slogan distillery in a cave . Loch Ewe Distillery was founded in November 2005 by John Clotworthy, owner of the Drumchork Lodge Hotel in Aultbea , and began operations in July 2006. The company uses two small, heated by a fire stills as in Wester Ross in Black burners were common. You can only absorb 120 liters of mash per distillation.

There are also smaller stills with a capacity of one or five liters so that course participants can distill their own schnapps . Since the maturation store is very small and the demand is comparatively high, the brandy is usually bottled in 100 ml bottles and sold after just six weeks. The distillery has been on sale since September 2015 for a minimum price of £ 750,000 so that the current owners, John Clotworthy and his wife Frances, can retire and will continue to operate.
