Loch Langavat , Scottish Gaelic Loch Langabhat , is a freshwater lake on the Scottish Hebridean island of Lewis and Harris . It is one of four lakes with this name on the double island (see also Loch Langavat (disambiguation) ).

The name Langavat is derived from the Old Norse words lang and vatn and means "long lake". It comes from the time of the Viking colonization of the Hebrides.

Near the north shore is a round island 12.5 meters in diameter, which may be man-made. It was connected to the bank by an 18-meter-long and 1.5-meter-wide dam, which is now below the water level. On the island are the ruinous remains of a broch or dun , possibly dating to the Iron Age.

geography

The lake is about seven kilometers north of the southern tip of Harris about three kilometers northeast of Leverburgh . Located on Harris, Loch Langavat was historically part of the traditional county of Inverness-shire . Today Harris is part of the Outer Hebrides Council Area . Located in the extremely sparsely populated interior of the island, the shores of Loch Langavat are not populated.
