Loch nan Gillean is a lake on the Scottish Hebridean island of Islay . It is located in the southern part of the island on the Oa peninsula . The closest settlements are Coillabus, 700 m northeast, and Kinnabus, 1.2 km southwest . The now abandoned settlement of Asabus was once a few hundred meters south . The lake is about 330 m long, a maximum of 110 m wide and runs in a north-easterly direction. The larger neighboring lake, Loch Ard Achadh, is located 200 m south-east . On the north-west bank, a stream flows from Loch nan Gillean, which flows six kilometers further west into the Atlantic Ocean .

Between Loch nan Gillean and Loch Ard Achadh are the remains of an abandoned farm. Directly to the east of it, the earth-covered traces of much older dwellings were discovered, which probably date from the time the island was occupied by Vikings. The discovery of an ax from the late Bronze Age suggests that the shores of the lake were already settled in the Bronze and Early Iron Ages.
