Lochheim is a deserted area on the northwestern edge of the municipality of Sandhausen in the Rhein-Neckar district in the administrative district of Karlsruhe in the north of Baden-Württemberg . It is located south of the Leimbach and the Landgraben and north of the large sand dune fields on a flat, looped sand ridge on the southern edge of the Neckar alluvial cone in the Neckar-Rhine plain (which belongs to the Northern Upper Rhine Lowland in the Upper Rhine Plain ). The large sand dune fields south of the Lochheim desert are located in the forest area called Pflege Schönau - in which the nature reserve " Sandhausener Düne, Pflege Schönau-Galgenbuckel " is also located - in the Hardt Plains .

The first reliable documented mention of Lochheim comes from the year 1131, but the mention of a church consecration in 1061 may already refer to this Lochheim. Ceramic finds indicate settlement since the 7th century. From 1196 to 1198 the Schönau monastery acquired the place and converted it into a grangie , which was completed in 1208 with the demolition of the church. Schönauer estate administrators are mentioned until 1245, and agricultural use is reported until the 15th century. In Sandhausen and the Heidelberg district of Kirchheim , a Lochheimer Straße each indicates the desert.

The desert was found again in 1993 and as a result, ceramics from the 7th to the 15th century were found during inspections by students from the Sandhausen high school under the direction of Manfred Löscher. The remains of several house squares, a small hall church and a low castle with several moats could be identified in aerial photographs .
