Lochmatten ( Valais German Lochmattä ) is a hamlet in the municipality of St. Niklaus (Valais German Zaniglas ) in the Valais district of Visp . Many well-known and great mountain guide pioneers emerged from the Lochmatter family , whose family name comes from the hamlet of Lochmatten in St. Niklaus.

geography

The hamlet of Lochmatten is located at 1070  m above sea level. M. north of St. Niklaus Dorf ( 1120  m above sea level , Valais German Zaniglas ) on the right bank of the Vispe , with today's canton main road 213 running south towards Zermatt and Grächen and north towards Visp through the middle of the hamlet Lochmatten . In the south the hamlet is separated from the hamlet of Riedmatten by the Riedbach . In the north the hamlet of Lochmatten borders on the hamlet of Steg and in the east on the hamlets of Wichel and Rossen .

archeology

1891 were in the perforated mats at an altitude of 1098  m above sea level. M. discovered twenty stone slab graves from the Neolithic . A grave could even be opened under one of the stone slabs, which contained a stone beaker six cm high and two bracelets.

family name

The family name Lochmatter comes from the hamlet of Lochmatten in St. Niklaus. The oldest known representative of the Lochmatter family is Anton Lochmatter , who in 1505 acquired the citizenship rights from Visp for £ 10 .

Many well-known mountain guide pioneers emerged from the Lochmatter family, who provided the first mountain guides in their home town of St. Niklaus, who were great innovators in mountaineering and who, in the first two generations, had a decisive influence on mountain guides throughout the world during the 19th and 20th centuries.
