Theo Loevendie (born September 17, 1930 in Amsterdam ) is a Dutch jazz musician and classical composer .

Loevendie studied composition and clarinet at the Amsterdam Conservatory . He worked exclusively as a jazz musician until the 1960s. He played in the Boy Edgar Big Band and has led his own quartet or quintet. Loevendie has performed at relevant European festivals such as the Montreux Jazz Festival in Antibes / Juan les Pins , in Molde and at the Jazz Jamboree Warsaw . He also played in his consort with jazz musicians such as Willem van Manen , Hans Dulfer , Harry Sparnaay, Leo Cuypers, Arjen Gorter , Ernst Reijseger and Martin van Duynhoven. He then worked from 1970 as a professor of composition at various conservatories, until 1988 in Rotterdam , until 1997 in The Hague and most recently in Amsterdam. Loevend has been writing classical music since 1968. In addition to orchestral compositions, he has also written the musical fairy tale “The Emperor's Nightingale” (based on Hans Christian Andersen ) and four operas . Some of them were also performed in the USA and Germany.

Loevendie performs regularly with his ensemble Ziggurat .

Loevendie has received numerous awards for his work as a jazz musician as well as a composer.
