The party has been banned by the Chinese Communist Party (CCP). The Local Committee of the Chinese Democratic Party was established in 1989 by Cunzhu Zheng, a former student leader in Anhui Province and a secret member of the Chinese Democratic Party since 2001.

history

Establishment of the Democratic Party of China

Although the group's founding date was June 25, 1998, the group registered the party on June 28, 1998 when Bill Clinton visited China. Wang Youcai , one of the main activists during the 1989 Tian'anmen massacre , went to the Civic Public Affairs Hall of Hangzhou, Zhejiang Province with Wang Donghai and Lin Hui to officially register the party. However, registration was denied.

Communist Party reaction

On June 29, 1998, Wang was arrested by the state police from his own home in front of his family members. He was accused of creating an opposition to the Chinese government. His trial began on December 18th and lasted only a few hours; he didn't have a lawyer. On December 21, 1998, he was swiftly sentenced to 11 years' imprisonment and three years of deprivation of political rights for undermining.

On the same day, Xu Wenli , a 55-year-old member, was sentenced to 13 years for toppling the Communist Party.

On December 17, 1998, Qing Yongmin was sentenced to 12 years in prison for violating domestic security.

Li Peng , then chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress, proclaimed: "If the purpose [of the group] is contrary to the constitution or basic policy of China, or to the socialist market economy, national unity and independence, or to social stability, and if it is aimed at to negate the leadership of the Communist Party, then it will not be allowed to exist. "

Amnesty International's 2012 annual report on China states: "Authorities [continue] to harass, intimidate, persecute and criminalize pro-democracy and human rights defenders." Freedom House states that "opposition groups like the Democratic Party of China (DPC) suppressed and members imprisoned ”(2012).

Taking action against other members

Hundreds of members of the Chinese Democratic Party have been arrested, arrested and sentenced to prison terms. Xu Guang, Tan Hai, Lai Jinbiao, Hu Chen, Wu Yuanming, and Lou Baosheng are some of the party members. Cyber dissident He Depu has also been arrested.

First organization of the Democratic Party of China in the USA

Most of the party's founders were arrested in 1989. Xie Wanjun, founder of the party in Shandong Province , fled to the United States and later formed the Democratic Party of China Foundation in New York. Two new groups were later formed by Wang Jun and Liu Dongxing, who worked with Xie Wanjun before organizing their own groups for the Chinese Democratic Party.

China Democratic Party headquarters overseas

Xu Wenli was later exiled to the United States on December 24, 2002. Without communicating with Xie Wanjun to create a unity party, Xu Wenli formed a new group: Headquarters of the Chinese Democratic Party overseas . His party did not cooperate with Xie Wanjun. This was the beginning of the dissociation of the Chinese Democratic Party.

Coordination platform of the Democratic Party of China

Wang Youcai was exiled to the United States on March 4, 2004. He founded the coordination platform of the Democratic Party of China, which is supported by the party's members.

No unified Central Committee of the Democratic Party of China

Since the founders of the party were unable to hold a meeting for the establishment of the DPC Central Committee in 1998 due to differences of opinion, and the founders in exile in the United States could not cooperate, the Democratic Party of China could not be established as a unified party. There are several parties that call themselves “headquarters” or “central committee”, but they do not control each other but develop independently of each other.

In January 2008, party member Zheng Cunzhu founded the Local Committee of the Democratic Party of China in Los Angeles. Zheng Cunzhu was a former student leader during the pre-democratic movements in Anhui Province in 1989 and published an open letter to Chinese leaders calling for the resumption of political reform.

The Local Committee of the Democratic Party of China will try to establish the party in local cities and give preference to the local exercise of democracy.
