Loma Prieta is a mountain in Santa Clara County, California . With a height of 1155 m, it is the highest mountain in the Santa Cruz Mountains on the Pacific coast. Its name comes from Spanish and means something like "dark hill" . The summit can be reached via an unpaved road and is the location of numerous transmission systems. From the Loma Prieta, the amateur astronomer Don Edward Machholz discovered several comets, including 96P / Machholz .

The Loma Prieta earthquake in 1989 was named after the Loma Prieta . Its epicenter was a few kilometers from the mountain top.
