The Loma de Tiscapa is a volcanic mountain in the urban area of Managua , the capital of Nicaragua . The west side of the Loma is built on by buildings from a military hospital, on the north side is a Colonia Militar and on the east side of the mountain is the night club Mirador Tiscapa .

Memorabilia from the history of Nicaragua

The Loma offers a view of Managua and its surroundings. Memorabilia from Nicaragua's history are on display on the mountain . It is the rear of an equestrian statue of Anastasio Somoza García , a light tracked armored vehicle type Tankette L3 , a gift from Benito Mussolini to Anastasio Somoza García, as well as a wheeled armor, type Daimler Mk I , which Fulgencio Batista had given Somoza García.

1972 earthquake

Today the Loma lies on the crater rim of an exploded volcano that previously rose above the Laguna de Tiscapa . The tremors of the 1972 earthquake were recorded at the nearby ExxonMobil petroleum refinery . These records and the extent of the destruction in the urban area indicated the Loma as the epicenter of the quake.

Laguna de Tiscapa

In the southern part of the Loma, the Laguna de Tiscapa , part of Lake Managua, extends . Its water level is 52 meters above sea level and its depth is 40 meters. The lagoon with no outflow is filled with sediments that have been contaminated with anthropogenic substances for about 130 years . The southern tributaries are the rivers Avenida Casimiro Sotelo and Avenida de las Naciones Unidas , which flows into Los Gauchos and is the northern extension of the Carretera a Masaya .

history

Monument of Sandino on the Loma de Tiscapa

Tiscapa means mirror in Nahuat . José Santos Zelaya had a fortress built on the Loma in 1894. On November 25, 1888, a water supply via pipes and pumps was opened, with the flanks of the Loma forming the high point. On October 25, 1925 Emiliano Chamorro Vargas had the official residence of President José Carlos Solórzano Gutiérrez , on the Loma de Tiscapa, occupied in his coup, which later became known as El Lomazo . On January 4, 1931, José María Moncada Tapia opened his official residence on the Tiscapa. This building suffered the first damage in an earthquake on March 31, 1931 at 10:23 a.m. After the earthquake, Moncada took up residence with Anastasio Somoza García. Somoza later had the official residence of the commandant of the Guardia Nacional de Nicaragua , called La Curva , built next to that of the president. Augusto César Sandino had his last dinner on the Loma on February 21, 1934 , when Somoza's people were murdered while leaving the building. Somoza García, inspired by Mussolini, had the Tribuna Monumental en la Explanada de Tiscapa set up a 700-seat audience stage, in front of which the inauguration of Leonardo Argüello Barreto took place. Elegant receptions were held on the terraces, while torture and rape took place in the cellars of the buildings, and the victims were murdered in other places. After the 1972 earthquake, Anastasio Somoza Debayle had a new building built, which became known as the bunker . The capture of the Tiscapa on July 19, 1979 symbolized the end of the rule of the Somoza clan .

The Loma continued to be used as a prison, the tank garage of the Primer Batallón of the Guardia Nacional was used for prisoners from the Guardia Nacional de Nicaragua , for members of the Partido Liberal Nacionalista , the Somozas party and non-military civilians. A prominent prisoner was Nicolás López Maltez, the then editor of the daily newspaper La Estrella de Nicaragua . Another prominent prisoner was Enrique Bolaños Geyer , who was then president of the Consejo Superior de la Empresa Privada (COSEP) business association.

In 1990 a sculpture by Augusto César Sandino was erected in the style of a silhouette .
