Emiliano Chamorro Vargas (born May 11, 1871 in Acoyapa , † February 26, 1966 in Managua ) was President of Nicaragua from January 1, 1917 to December 31, 1920 and from January 17 to October 30, 1926 .

Life

Chamorro Vargas was the son of Salvador Chamorro and his wife Gregoria Vargas Báez, grandson of Dionisio Chamorro Alfaro and his wife Mercedes Oreamuno, great-nephew of Pedro Joaquín Chamorro y Alfaro , Fernando Chamorro Alfaro and Fruto Chamorro Pérez .

When José Santos Zelaya was overthrown in 1909, Chamorro Vargas became chairman of the constituent assembly and chairman of the Partido Conservador . As a reward for his contribution to the failure of a revolt against President Adolfo Díaz , the latter sent him to the USA as ambassador. As ambassador to the USA, he negotiated the Bryan-Chamorro Treaty in 1914 . This gave the USA the unlimited right to build a canal through Nicaragua, which connects the Pacific Ocean with the Caribbean.

In 1917 Chamorro Vargas was elected President of Nicaragua. He held the office until 1921 and then became ambassador to the USA again. He ran for president in 1923, and José Carlos Solórzano Gutiérrez became president of the Partido Conservador Republicano in an alianza libero-conservadora with Juan Bautista Sacasa from the Partido Liberal as vice-president. On October 25, 1925, Chamorro Vargas launched a coup against Solórzano. Solórzano remained president until Chamorro forced him out of office by force of arms on January 16, 1926. Emiliano Chamorro was not recognized by the US government, Chamorro resigned on October 30, 1926. His successor Sebastián Uriza was in office from November 11 to November 14, 1926. The US government recognized Adolfo Díaz, an accountant for a US mining company, as President of Nicaragua for the second time.

Chamorro Vargas was sent as ambassador to a number of European countries. According to the history of the Partido Conservador , he was its chairman in exile . In 1950 he arranged himself and the Partido Conservador in the Pacto de los Generales with the regime of Anastasio Somoza García . The Oligarchy of the Partido Conservador was granted a certain number of seats in both legislative chambers by the Somoza clan .
