The Long Lake ( English for "elongated lake") is a lake in the Thunder Bay District in the Canadian province of Ontario .
The elongated lake has a length of 85 km (the northern part 72 km in NNE-SSW orientation, the southern part 13 km in north-south direction) and a maximum width of 3 km. Long Lake lies in the area of the Canadian Shield at an altitude of 313 m .
The lake was originally drained via the Kenogami River north to the Albany River and on to Hudson Bay . Due to the construction of the Kenogami Diversion Dam 15 km north of Long Lake in the years 1937-1938, on which the upper Kenogami River is dammed, its water now flows almost completely - contrary to the original direction of flow - to Long Lake.
At the southern end of the lake, the water of Long Lake now flows via a drainage channel to the Long Lake Control Dam ( ⊙ ), which regulates the outflow. At this point the construction of a hydropower plant is being planned. The water continues to flow over the Aguasabon River to Lake Superior . There is a hydroelectric power station in the vicinity of Terrace Bay , which uses the diverted water to generate electricity.
At the north end of Long Lake is Longlac on the east bank . The Trans-Canada Highway ( Ontario Highway 11 ) runs along the lakeshore at the north end of Long Lake.
Long Lake is a destination for anglers who mainly catch glass ey perch , American char and pike here .
