Lonquimay is a municipality in Chile. It is located in the Región de la Araucanía . It is the easternmost municipality in the region and borders Argentina.
geography
The headwaters of the Río Bío Bío , which rises in the Galletúe and Icalma lakes, are located in the mountain community. The settlement center is located in an intra-Andean mountain valley. To the west, the municipality is separated from the Sierra Nevada and the Lonquimay volcano from the main Chilean valley. The border with Argentina is formed by the main Andean cordillera and the Atlantic-Pacific watershed. There are two mobile passes that lead to Argentina (Paso Pino Hachado 1824 meters above sea level and Paso Icalma 1300 meters above sea level). The most important road connection to Temuco leads through the former Túnel Las Raíces railway tunnel (4528 m). Until 2006 it was the longest tunnel in Latin America.
economy
The community is sparsely populated. The vegetation is mainly characterized by subtropical grass steppes ( pampas ) and in certain favorable locations by southern beech and araucaria forests. Forestry and livestock farming are important. Tourism in both summer and winter (Centro de Montaña Arenales; Corralco) has become an important part of the economy. The border crossing at Paso Pino Hachado is one of the most important mountain passes in southern Chile.
politics
The current mayor is Nibaldo Alegría Alegría ( Partido Demócrata Cristiano de Chile ).
