Earl of Linlithgow
Earl of Linlithgow was a hereditary British title in the Peerage of Scotland .
Award and history of the title
The title was created on December 25, 1600 for Alexander Livingston, 7th Lord Livingston . This was Burgvogt ( keeper ) of the royal residence Linlithgow Palace at Linlithgow in West Lothian . Along with the earliest dignity, he was awarded the subordinate title of Lord Livingston and Callendar . As early as 1592 he had inherited the title of Lord Livingston from his father , which had been bestowed on his great-great-great-great-grandfather in 1458.
With the childless death of the 4th Earl, the title fell to his nephew as 5th Earl. This had already held the title of 4th Earl of Callendar (created 1641), 4th Lord Livingston and Almond (created 1641) and 4th Lord Livingston of Almond (created 1633) since 1692 . All of his titles belonged to the Peerage of Scotland. As a staunch Jacobite , he took part in the 1715 uprising and led a cavalry squadron into the battle of Sheriffmuir . Although he surrendered to the Duke of Argyll after the battle , he was convicted and ostracized for high treason on February 17, 1716 , all of his titles were stripped from him and his possessions and lands were confiscated from the Crown. He himself escaped to the continent in 1716 and joined the titular king James III. in exile in Urbino .
