Lord Mantis was an American sludge band founded in 2005 .

history

Early years

Lord Mantis was founded in 2005 by drummer Bill Bumgardner and guitarist Greg Gomer, both of whom previously played together in the local band Dino. In 2007 the singer and bassist Charlie Fell joined them. Between April and May 2007, the three members recorded their first four-song EP together and released it in August 2008 under the title Period Face via Witch Trial Records, limited to 500 units. In 2008 guitarist Andrew "Aamonael" Markuszewski, who had already played at Nachtmystium , joined Lord Mantis. Until 2012, the band remained in the line-up of Bumgardner, Gomer, Fell and Markuszewski. The band released the albums Spawning the Nephilim on Seventh Rule Recordings and Pervertor on Candlelight Records during this time . With Spawning the Nephilim , the band began to engage Sanford Parker , who has since acted as the band's producer. Gomer left Lord Mantis in 2012 and was replaced for two years by Abigail Williams' guitarist Ken Sorceron . With Sorceron as guitarist, Lord Mantis released the album Death Mask on Profound Lore Records .

In-band conflict

In 2014, Lord Mantis separated after a physical argument between Fell and Markuszewski during an appearance. In the run-up to the dispute, there was a dispute over the royalty for the vinyl release of the album Death Mask . Markuszewski released the LP on his own label New Density Records and denied the other band members a share of the proceeds from sales during the tour with Today is the Day . After this argument in Rhode Island, Lord Mantis were excluded from the main band for the further tour. Unlike Fells, Bumgardner and Markuszewski named his vice as the cause of the separation.

Fell and Sorceron wanted to continue the band and play with members of Altar of Plagues some already booked concert dates, such as the Roadburn Festival . After his return home, however, the administrator rights of the band's homepage and Facebook page were withdrawn from Fell , whereupon the latter had no further opportunity to promote the band's activities. The planned performances were meanwhile canceled by Markuszewski, who secured the band name, under threat of legal action against Fell.

New band line-up

In 2015, Bumgardner and Markuszewski reformed the band without Sorceron and Fell, replacing the previous Indian members Will Lindsay as bassist and Dylan O'Toole as singer, and Scott A. Shellhamer from American Heritage as guitarist. The band reformed in this way described this step as a consequence of a longstanding collaboration between the bands Indian and Lord Mantis and announced studio work. Former singer Fell criticized the replacement as a reformed Indian and illegitimate continuation of Lord Mantis under the auspices of Markuszewski and Bumgardner. Sorceron and Fell formed the band Missing with Jeff Wilson from Abigail Williams, Jef Whitehead from Lurker of Chalice , Sanford Parker from Minsk and Fade Kainer from Theologian .

With the new line-up, Lord Mantis recorded the EP Nice Teeth Whore, which was released in April 2016 on Markuszewski's label New Density Records . Despite the changed line-up, the group kept the style they had previously played. However, this time the EP was not produced by Sanford Parker, who initiated Missing together with Fell and Sorceron. Andy Nelson, who previously worked for Weekend Nachos , Like Rats , Dead in the Dirt or Harms Way , took over the production.

After Bumgardner's suicide

In October 2016, Bumgardner's suicide was made public through various Internet portals in the metal scene. Former guitarist Sorceron expressed his regret on Facebook for not having settled the dispute between former bandmates. The band themselves announced in the same month that they were in an unclear state of persistent limbo . In March 2017, the band announced their breakup via Facebook. The band stated that the mere thought of reactivating the band left the members with a lasting emptiness.

A reunion nevertheless took place in the second half of 2019, with a line-up that brought Fell and Sorceron back into the band. Markuszewski and O'Toole stayed with them. Drummer Bryce Butler, who had previously supported Sorceron at Abigail Williams, was a new addition. None of the founding members Gromer and Bumgardner were involved in the reunion. At the same time, the band announced the release of a new album in November of the same year. The album was released under the title Universal Death Church through Profound Lore.

content

Fell described the lyrics as an expression of their own violence and darkness. He emphasizes that, on the one hand, he does not have complete control of the writing process and the pieces come to him from outside, and on the other hand, that he has not limited himself in this process. As reference points, he described both his drug addiction and drug experiences, as well as a confrontation with humanity.

"I watch people, like looking at them as if I'm not part of the species [.] These things are always weird for me, I've been up for a couple days. I'm unemployed and lazy and have too much time to think. "

“I look at people like I'm not part of the species while looking at them. These things always seem crazy to me. I've been awake for days. I'm unemployed and lazy and have too much time to think. "

- Charlie Fell

style

Micha from Metalnews.de compares the style of the band with Black Cobra and describes the sound as a hard sludge with black metal- oriented guttural vocals . On Stormbringer.at the music is described as surprisingly fast-paced in places as well as tricky and in places unrhythmic. On Schweres-Metall.de the sound is described as a doom-heavy sludge in mid- and downtempo "paired with sick melodies that are slightly reminiscent of NACHTMYSTIUM or also ' Leviathan ', even sicker, varied vocals and in places absolutely hypnotic passages".
