Lorenz Englmann (born September 11, 1821 in Kirchendemenreuth ; † August 29, 1881 in Brennerbad ) was a German classical philologist and author of numerous school books.

Englmann's father, Wolfgang Englmann, was a shoemaker. Englmann attended the Latin school and grammar school in Amberg from 1833 to 1841 , studied philosophy, theology and philology in Munich from 1841 to 1847 and was an assistant in 1848 and a study teacher at the Munich Latin school in 1849. In addition, he was a tutor at the Cadet Corps from 1848 to 1853 . In 1853 he became a professor at the Ludwigsgymnasium in Munich, whose director he became in 1860. In 1872 he became director of the Wilhelmsgymnasium .

He was a very successful textbook author who kept in close contact with his colleagues and improved his textbooks again and again, so that they were regarded as the standard textbooks for Latin lessons until the 20th century . In his day, the crown of teaching was translating German into Latin, which was spent on the entire upper school. That is why his textbooks are largely no longer usable today.

His German grammars were also used as a basis for the spelling reform of 1901 .
