history

The mineral spring was first mentioned in a document around 1400. Prince Sigismund the Coin-Rich and his wife Eleanor of Scotland were looking for relaxation here as early as 1460.

In 1607 the bath was taken over by the Reichspfennigmeister Zacharias Geizkofler and provided with a foundation for poor bathers. After the family died out, the bath fell to the city of Sterzing around 1730 .

Since 1869 even express trains have stopped at what was then the Brennerbahn stop . In this heyday of the bath, famous personalities such as Henrik Ibsen , Richard Strauss , Franz Lehár and Leo Fall sought healing of rheumatic complaints, catarrhs and whooping cough in the alkaline-iron-containing, carbonated, sulfuric acid and lime-rich water.

In 1899, the bath became the property of a Brennerbad company , which built a grand hotel in 1902. But already twenty years later this was destroyed by flames. After that, the bathroom was sold again and could no longer come close to the number of guests it had so far. Skiing in the Zirog region brought a temporary upswing in the second half of the 20th century .

The end of the burner bath

In addition to the fire at the Grand Hotel in 1922, the freedom of movement of bathers was also severely restricted by the demarcation on the Brenner after the First World War . The construction of the Brenner motorway finally led to the end of the bath. The ski area had to stop operating in the mid-1980s. The formerly famous Brennerbad had almost disappeared.

New beginnings

In the 21st century, the existing bath house with the source was taken over by Brenner Thermalquellen GmbH for the treatment of diseases of the respiratory and urinary tract, skin diseases, ear, nose and throat diseases as well as rheumatic diseases.

There have been plans for thermal baths in neighboring Gossensaß since 2005 .
