Lorenz Lemlin

Lorenz Lemlin (also: Laurentius Lemlin; * around 1495 in Eichstätt ; † between 1549 and 1551 in Heidelberg ) was a German composer , teacher and conductor of the Renaissance .

Live and act

The exact date of birth and death of Lorenz Lemlin could not yet be determined by music historical research. It is very likely, however, that he received his musical training at the cathedral school in his hometown, apparently from the cathedral cantor there, Bernhard Adelmann von Adelmannshausen . The first real evidence of his life is his enrollment at the University of Heidelberg on April 7, 1513 under the name Laurentius Lemlyn de Eystat dioc Eustatensis . Just one and a half years later, on November 13, 1514, he received the academic degree of "baccalaureus artium" there. A short time later he began his service with Ludwig V , where he rose to the position of Kapellmeister at the Heidelberg court. Lorenz Lemlin composed sacred music in Latin and German songs there. In 1549 the third volume of the fresh teutsche Liedlein collection was published by the composer Georg Forster . In the preface to the dedicatee Jobst von Brandt , the editor reminds him of the joint years of apprenticeship with Lorenz Lemlin with the words: "Our pious preceptor, composer, and highly praiseworthy elector Senger or Capellmeyster Laurentio Lemlin", which proves that both people and two other composers named had been choirboys in Heidelberg under Lorenz Lemlin . These four composers later became known as the Heidelberger Liedmeister and represented the majority of the authors in Georg Forster's anthologies . Their works are mostly superior to Lemlin's, but Forster expresses his appreciation for Lemlin by including 15 of his songs in the “ Fresh German songs ”. After the dedication of 1549 mentioned above, Lorenz Lemlin's trace is lost.

meaning

Lemlin's songwriting is considered to be comparatively conservative and not very inspired, albeit technically mature, which is why he is more known as a teacher of the Heidelberger Liedmeister Jobst von Brandt, Georg Forster, Caspar Othmayr and Stefan Zirler than as an outstanding composer. Lemlin's songs use older and newer compositional techniques; The paired imitation between the top voice and the bass , which is often found, is reminiscent of the songs of Heinrich Finck and Heinrich Isaac . On the other hand, his careful text declamation can only be found again in the chansons of the late 16th century. The six-part song “Der Gutzgauch auf dem Zaune sat” is an exception because of the tone painting design (imitation of the cuckoo's call) and because of its folk attitude. In contrast to this piece, his other songs were not widely used outside of the Heidelberg district.

The three Ps - motets Lemlins show in the progressive sense typical features of German Josquin Succession; on the other hand, his other motets are rather medium-quality utility music.
