Lorenz Magaard

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Lorenz Magaard (born May 21, 1934 in Wallsbüll , Germany ; † July 1, 2020 in Honolulu ) was a German-American mathematician and oceanographer who significantly further developed the theory of waves in the ocean and also provided important impulses as an organizer of teaching and research Has.

career path

Lorenz Magaard attended the old grammar school in Flensburg from 1944 to 1955 and then studied mathematics and physics at the Christian Albrechts University in Kiel . He received his diploma in 1961 and a Dr. rer. nat. at the University of Kiel. After completing his diploma, he went to the Kiel University's Institute for Oceanography (see also GEOMAR Helmholtz Center for Ocean Research Kiel ), where he worked as a research assistant from 1961, as a lecturer from 1969 and as a professor for theoretical oceanography from 1972. In 1963 Magaard was a Geophysical Fluid Dynamics (GFD) Fellow at the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution , USA. In 1975 he moved to the University of Hawaii at Manoa , Honolulu, USA, and worked there as professor of oceanography, and since 2009 as emeritus professor.

Scientific work

After starting in mathematics with a dissertation on the embedding of Riemannian spaces in Einstein spaces and conformal Euclidean spaces, the theory of oceanic waves was the focus of most of his work. During his activity in Kiel, studies on internal waves in the stratified Baltic Sea and the associated formation processes and on the system of Seiches in the Baltic Sea dominated. After moving to Honolulu, he expanded his wave studies to other regions. Other research topics were eddy energy in the ocean and shear instabilities in the western Pacific. His publication list includes seven contributions to books and 38 articles in peer-reviewed journals. In his teaching in Kiel and Honolulu he dealt with surface and internal waves in the ocean, tides, turbulence and dimensional analysis. In Hawaii, strategies for using the ocean followed.
