Lorenz Schmitt (born November 17, 1936 ; † 2018 ) was a German soccer player who, as an offensive player at VfR Mannheim, played 159 league games in what was then the first-class soccer Oberliga Süd from 1957 to 1963 and scored 45 goals for the German champions of 1949 .

Player career

From the southernmost part of Hesse , the city of four castles Neckarsteinach , the 20-year-old attacker Lorenz Schmitt from the Hessian amateur area moved to the southern upper division VfR Mannheim for the 1957/58 season. In the Oberliga Süd, the talented attacker made his debut on the first round matchday, August 11, 1957, in a 3-2 away win at Jahn Regensburg in the Oberliga. Schmitt, the technician with excellent dribbling skills, made a debut made to measure: In the 75th minute, the newcomer , who was on half right in the World Cup system played at the time, scored the winning goal for VfR to make it 3-2. After a 2-0 deficit at halftime, the Mannheim team managed to turn things around and Schmitt celebrated a hopeful debut alongside the veterans Ernst Langlotz and Rudolf de la Vigne . At the end of the round, the blue-white-reds from the city of squares took 10th place and Schmitt had scored nine goals in 29 league games , without the striker Ernst-Otto Meyer , who was storming in Braunschweig for professional reasons . When in his second year at VfR, 1958/59, with the returnee Meyer and the other attacker Werner Keller from Hockenheim, the goal danger had significantly improved, the 71 goals conceded prevented a better performance than the achieved 8th place. Schmitt had scored ten goals in 28 league games alongside "Ötti" Meyer. His convincing performance led the man from Neckarsteinach to a North Baden contract player selection, which played two games against the B national team of Bulgaria in November 1958 and May 1959, respectively. In Sofia, North Baden prevailed 4-2; On half right and half left, Schmitt and Langlotz from VfR formed the inner storm with KSC center forward Heinz Beck and determined the game of the guests from the midfield with the two KSC outer runners Heinz Ruppenstein and Bernhard Termath . The second leg on May 13, 1959 in Mannheim won the North Baden contract player selection 2-0. Here the attack with Willy Reitgaßl , Schmitt, Meyer, Günter Herrmann and Keller had come up.

In the 1959/60 association round, Schmitt and colleagues started with an 8-0 disaster and were at the bottom of the table after four games. Difficult to understand if you take note of the fact that VfR won the final of the South German Cup on September 6, 1959 (on the 3rd round match day) in the Karlsruhe Wildpark Stadium with a 1-0 against the reigning German champions Eintracht Frankfurt. Schmitt scored the winning goal for Mannheim.

In the last year of the old first-class Oberliga Süd, 1962/63, Schmitt played all 30 league games and scored five goals alongside Hans Arnold and Rudolf Bast . With the catch-up game on May 5, 1963, a 5-2 win at BC Augsburg, the chapter of the first-class Oberliga Süd ended. The excellent technician, dribbler and combination footballer Lorenz Schmitt had played 159 league games in the league from 1957 to 1963 and scored 45 goals for the grass players from Mannheim.

From the 1963/64 season, the VfR Mannheim played second class. He had not been nominated for the new central top performance of the Bundesliga and had to compete in the Regional Football League South . Under coach Hans Pilz and with the attacking formation Walter Röthinger, Werner Veit, Bast, Schmitt and Dieter Sagray, VfR started the regional round on August 4, 1963 with a 2-2 at FC Bayern Hof. Schmitt and colleagues achieved the outstanding victory on October 13, 1963 with a 3-0 home win against the favored Bayern Munich. Schmitt acted on half left and showed Bayern players like Sepp Maier , Werner Olk and Herbert Erhardt his playing skills. At the end of the round, the VfR finished 6th and Schmitt had scored four goals in 31 league appearances. After two missions at the beginning of the first half of the 1964/65 season with a goal, he ended his career as a contract footballer due to injury.
