Lorenz Zierl (born July 23, 1797 in Furth im Wald , † September 17, 1844 in Lindau ) was a pioneer of agricultural science in Bavaria in the first half of the 19th century.

Zierl, son of a surgeon, studied medicine and natural sciences at the University of Landshut . After his double doctorate in 1819 as a doctor of medicine and a doctor of philosophy , he went to Munich and acquired knowledge in the field of analytical chemistry as an assistant in several laboratories . In 1822 he got a job as a professor of chemistry at the newly founded agricultural college in Schleissheim. In 1823 he married the daughter of the agricultural scientist Max Schönleutner . In 1826 he took over a professorship for agriculture and technical chemistry at the University of Munich . He died at the age of 47.

His main concern was to promote agriculture by disseminating empirical knowledge and scientific knowledge. His numerous publications served this goal. He published fundamental articles on the scientific principles of plant cultivation, plant nutrition, fertilizer theory and meadow management in the "Yearbooks of the Royal Bavarian Agricultural Teaching Institutes in Schleissheim" (1829-1832), which he initially published together with Max Schönleutner. His book The Teaching of Agriculture , published in 1837, was published several times . From 1836 until his death, Zierl was editor of the “Centralblatt des Landwirthschaftlichen Verein in Bayern”.
