Loreto Sisters

Loreto sisters is the collective term for several women's congregations in the Roman Catholic Church . The school sisters devote themselves mainly to the training and education of young people, with the girls in the foreground.

Naming

The German spelling is Loretto and refers to the Italian pilgrimage site Loreto in Loreto ( Italy ). According to faith, the house of Mary is supposed to be here . Based on the veneration of Mary in Loreto, the Loreto sisters want to live “Marian” and receive the Holy Spirit like Mary . In this community they see themselves as the “handmaid of the Lord” (cf. Lk 1.38  EU ).

Sisters of Loretto at the Foot of the Cross (SL)

This congregation under papal law was founded in 1812 by the Belgian Father Charles Nerinckx in Kentucky ( USA ). The religious community is based in the USA and Latin America and has about 600 religious sisters.

Suore di Santa Maria di Loreto

The Italian congregation of papal law was founded in 1891 by Maria Natalina Bonardi . It has over 170 nuns and has its motherhouse in Vercelli .

Sisters of the Blessed Virgin Mary

The order community Institutum Beatae Mariae Virginis (IBMV) consists of two congregations under papal law and stands in the tradition of the English Misses founded by Maria Ward , today's Congregatio Jesu (CJ). It received papal recognition in 1877 and in 1979 adopted the rules of the order after Saint Ignatius of Loyola . Both institutions live according to the same rules of the order and pursue the same goals.

Irish branch

The Irish Loreto Sisters are the community founded in Rathfarnham in 1822 by Frances (Teresa) Ball IBMV. This Irish branch of the Maria Ward Sisters today has around 1,000 sisters in eleven provinces ; the Generalate is in Rome . The most famous member was Mother Teresa , who founded the Congregation of Missionaries of Charity in 1950 .

American branch

The American branch of the Sisters of Rathfarnham, founded in Canada in 1847 , has approximately 200 members and the motherhouse is in Toronto .
