Lossit is a hamlet on the west coast of the Scottish Hebridean island of Islay . The village is located on the Rhinns of Islay peninsula a few hundred meters from a small bay in the Atlantic Ocean known as Lossit Bay , into which a small stream called Lossit Burn flows through the settlement. Portnahaven and Port Charlotte , the most important settlements on the Rhinns of Islay, are five kilometers south and seven kilometers northeast, respectively. The closest settlement is Kelsay , which today only consists of an inhabited farm. Lossit can be reached via a single-lane road that leads from Portnahaven along the west coast to Kilchiaran and from there runs east to Port Charlotte. In 1841 there were 132 people living in Lossit. Of these, 61 lived in the Upper Lossit district and 71 in Lower Lossit . In 1851 the total number of inhabitants had already dropped to 89. As early as 1882 it was recorded that various buildings in Lossit were uncovered and therefore probably already uninhabited at that time. Today only one farm is still inhabited.
