Lothar Bertels (* 1949 in Paderborn ) is a German sociologist .

Life

After training as a stonemason and stone sculptor, which he completed with the journeyman's examination, he made up his Abitur at the Westfalen-Kolleg Paderborn and studied spatial planning (local, regional and state planning) at the Technical University of Dortmund from 1970 Graduated as a graduate engineer in 1975, and economics and social sciences as the second major from 1973 to 1976. After working in regional planning, administration and from 1980 to 1985 as a research assistant in the field of professional training at Antonius Lipsmeier , he switched to general sociology under Werner Fuchs-Heinritz at the Fernuniversität Hagen .

In 1986 he was awarded a doctorate degree for his sociological work on Neue Nachbarschaften - supervised by Heinz Abels and Werner Fuchs-Heinritz. rer. pol is doing his PhD. After a stay as a visiting professor at the University of Milwaukee, Wisconsin (USA) in 1989, he completed his habilitation in 1997 in the field of urban and regional sociology. In the same year he was offered a professorship in sociology at the Neubrandenburg University of Applied Sciences , which he did not accept. In 2000 he was appointed Professor of Sociology at the State University in Smolensk (Russia), where he has been researching and teaching as part of a scientific cooperation since 1996. This university awarded him the Dr. phil. hc In the same year he became professor for urban and regional sociology at the Fernuniversität Hagen. His work focuses on urban and regional research, biography research, demographic research and cultural sociology. He carried out numerous empirical research projects. From 1990 to 2012 he (together with Ulfert Herlyn ) examined social change in East Germany using the example of the city of Gotha . In this long-term study, the film documentation was systematically used and published as a corresponding method. From 2010 to 2014 Lothar Bertels was Managing Director of the Institute for Sociology at the FernUniversität Hagen. At the end of the 2014 summer semester, his period of service ended.

In addition to his professional activity, Lothar Bertels was active for many years in local politics and as an expert in the Enquète Commission of the Saarland State Parliament and the Demography Commission of Bündnis 90 / Die Grünen in the German Bundestag.
