Lothar Kuhlen (born February 2, 1950 in Eschwege ) is a German law scholar and professor at the University of Mannheim .

Life

After graduating from high school, Kuhlen studied law at the University of Frankfurt am Main from 1968 . After completing his studies in 1973 with the first state examination in law, he also began studying sociology in Frankfurt , which he completed in 1978 with the diploma thesis The Objectivity of Legal Norms. Concludes on the criticism of the radical labeling approach in the criminal sociology. In 1975 he was in Frankfurt for a Dr. iur. after being supervised by Dieter Simon . In 1980, Kuhlen passed his second state examination in law and then worked as a university assistant in the law department of the University of Frankfurt am Main. There he completed his habilitation in 1985 under the supervision of Klaus Lüderssen , whereupon he was awarded the Venia legendi for the subjects of criminal law, criminal procedural law, legal theory and legal sociology.

In 1986 he was appointed to the chair of criminal law and criminology at the University of Mannheim . In 1991, he changed to the professorship for criminal law and criminology, commercial and environmental criminal law, which he held until 2018. He turned down calls from the Universities of Hanover (1990), Basel (1993) and Frankfurt am Main (1994). In 1988/98, 1998/99 and 2001/02 Kuhlen served as dean of the Mannheim Faculty of Law. From 1996 to 2010 he was co-director of the Institute for Inland Shipping Law at the University of Mannheim, since 1997 he has been co-director of the joint institute of the Universities of Heidelberg and Mannheim for German, European and international medical law, health law and bioethics, and since 2010 he has been co-director of the Mannheim Institute for Transport - and traffic law. In 2008 he was visiting professor at Beijing Renmin University . 2016, he was from the University of San Pedro in Chimbote the honorary doctorate awarded. In 2018, Kuhlen was appointed senior professor at the University of Mannheim.

Works (selection)

Kuhlens research focuses on legal methodology and criminal law. In criminal law, in turn, his focus is on teaching objective attribution and intent for the general part and in the case of official offenses, medical criminal law, traffic criminal law, environmental and commercial criminal law for the special part.
