Lottlisa Behling

Lottlisa Gertrud Margarete Behling (born July 15, 1909 in Neustettin , Pomerania , † January 9, 1989 in Munich ) was a German art historian .

Lottlisa Behling, daughter of Margarete Behling, b. Schaeffer († July 2, 1955), studied botany and art history at the Universities of Greifswald , Halle and Berlin . She received her doctorate in Berlin in 1937 . Her dissertation was entitled The non-representational architectural ornament of the Gothic. Attempt a history of tracery . She then took on a job at the Staatliche Museen zu Berlin and was given a teaching position for medieval art and ornamentation at the University of Jena in 1946 . Two years later habilitated them at the Humboldt University in Berlin and was deputy director and director of the Institute of Art History at the University of Jena. In 1958 she left the GDR and initially received a teaching position in Erlangen . In 1960 she accepted a position at the Ludwig Maximilians University in Munich .

Her scientific work focused on the iconography of plants in medieval art . Her publications The Plants in Medieval Panel Painting and The Flora of Medieval Cathedrals are considered standard works.

In Munich, the Lottlisa-Behling-Weg in Schwabing-Freimann is named after her.
