Loughmoe Castle (also Loughmore Castle , Irish Caisleán Luachma , older Caisleán Luach Magh ) is the ruin of a lowland castle in the village Loughmore in Templemore in Ireland's County Tipperary . The castle was formerly the residence of the Purcell and Butler families and the Barons Loughmoe .
The castle ruins can be seen from the Dublin - Cork rail line between Templemore and Thurles train stations . If you turn off the national road N62 and drive through the village, the castle ruins are on the right after you have passed under the railway bridge and before you reach the bridge over the Suir River .
history
The oldest part of the castle was built in the 15th or 16th century. Originally the castle consisted of a four-story tower house . The Purcell family expanded the castle in the 17th century. They lived in the castle until around 1760, when it fell into disrepair.
