Louis Ferdinand Antoni (born November 15, 1872 in Bastia , † December 14, 1940 in Algiers ) was a French orientalist painter and etcher who was mostly active in Algeria .

A few weeks after his birth in Corsica , Antoni came to Algeria with his parents. He attended St. Charles College in Blida , then the Lyceum in Algiers. He studied at the École des Beaux-Arts de Algiers with Hippolyte Dubois . In 1892 he received a scholarship that enabled him to study with Léon Bonnat at the École des beaux-arts in Paris .

After completing his studies, he returned to Algeria in 1901 and settled in Algiers. He showed his works at the Algerian salons and the Salon des Artistes Français .

In 1907 he met the painter Marie Gautier in Algiers , who introduced him to the technique of color engraving. They married in Paris on June 27, 1907.

He created etchings that were published by the Petit publishing house. In 1909 the artist won a French West Africa (AOF) travel grant and landed in Dakar . He visited Guinea , Ivory Coast , Benin , Senegal and Timbuktu . He brought many paintings and etchings from this study trip. Back in Paris he studied the art of frescoes.

In 1912 he was appointed professor of decorative arts at the École des Beaux-Arts in Algiers, a position he held until his death. After the death of Léon Cauvy in 1933, he took over the management of the École des Beaux-Arts.

After the outbreak of World War I , he was called up for military service on September 18, 1914. In March 1916 he was promoted to sub-lieutenant, was wounded a few days later and came to Switzerland in 1917 .

Louis Ferdinand Antoni was made a Knight of the Legion of Honor . In 1922 he was elected a member of the Société nationale des beaux-arts , which awarded him the Prix Paquin. In 1928 he received the Gillot Dard Prize.
