Life

The birth of an heir was long awaited, and when Maria Leszczyńska gave birth to a healthy son in 1729, there were great celebrations. For the first time in a long time, the continuation of the dynasty seemed assured. In 1745 the sixteen-year-old Dauphin was married to his father's cousin, 19-year-old Maria Teresa of Spain. This marriage arose from the tradition of Catholic rulers to marry one another and also strengthened the alliance between France and Spain against the arch enemy of the Bourbons: the House of Habsburg . However, Maria Teresa died giving birth to her first child, Marie Thérese (1746–1748). The eighteen-year-old Ludwig was then married to the 16-year-old Maria Josepha of Saxony , the younger daughter of Maria Josepha of Austria and Elector August III. married.

The Dauphin was rather ungracious, but educated and well-bred. He also preferred conversation to hunting or feasting; his morals were well trained. He became a great supporter of the Jesuits; his sisters saw in him the ideal Christian prince. Although his father kept him away from any political activity, the Dauphin became the center of the Christian religious party, which hoped to gain more power after his accession to the throne. Louis Ferdinand died of tuberculosis in Fontainebleau in 1765 at the age of 36 . His parents survived him and the new heir to the throne was his son Louis Auguste, Duke of Berry, who later became Louis XVI. ascended the throne.
