Louis Joseph Camuti (* 1893 in Parma ; † February 24, 1981 near Mount Vernon , New York ) was an American veterinarian and author of Italian descent.

Life

Camuti came from a traditional northern Italian family based in Parma , who had produced many human and veterinary medicine over generations. His parents emigrated to the United States with the then nine-year-old Louis and his younger brother, they arrived in New York on March 17, 1902 . Camuti's father imported Italian products and was able to finance his son's studies, so that Camuti first studied agronomy before, according to his own admission, tossed a coin and decided against human and veterinary medicine. His studies were interrupted by military service during the First World War, which he performed in the USA, he graduated from New York University in 1920 .

Right at the beginning of his career, he had to switch his practice from horses, which were increasingly being replaced by cars as workhorses, to pets such as dogs and cats . After several unsuccessful attempts, he managed to set up a functioning practice in Mount Vernon, and later moved to Park Avenue . Over time he specialized in cats, which he later treated mainly through house calls, which he carried out from late afternoon to evening. In 1960 he fell ill with a dog and cat hair allergy and was only able to continue practicing with the help of medication. He was known in New York as the "Cat Doctor" and practiced for over 60 years. He wrote two books about his work, of which the second, entitled All my patients are under the bed, was an international success and has so far reached 11 editions in Germany alone.

Camuti, still a practicing vet, died of a heart attack while driving his car on the way back to his home in Mount Vernon. From 1920 until his death he was married to Alexandra Landi, who was also of Italian descent, and they had a daughter and a son. The Dr. Louis J. Camuti Memorial Endowment Fund continues his life's work, and maintains the Dr. Louis J. Camuti Memorial Feline Consultation Service at Cornell University .
